MEN'S BASKETBALL GARNERS THREE AWARDS AT ANNUAL LEAGUE BANQUET

BARRIE, Ont -- After finishing the regular season with an 18-2 record, the No. 5 Humber men's basketball team was honoured Thursday morning when the league announced its yearly awards, as determined by a polling of the conference's coaches.

In the toughest conference in the CCAA, Humber secured an OCAA championship appearance for the 36th straight season and established numerous program records along the way under first-year head coach Samson Downey.

After winning 17 consecutive games to start the season and leading Humber to its first division title since 2015, Samson Downey was named the West Division Coach of the Year. Coach Downey becomes just the fourth Humber bench boss to win the award and first since Shawn Collins in 2011.

On the court, forward Jaylan Morgan was named a first-team all-star after leading the top team in the conference in points (320) and rebounds (127). Playing in his first season with Humber basketball, the Brampton native shot a program record 47.1 per cent from 3-point range and became the 15th player to join Humber's 300-point club.

A highly touted recruit from CTA, Kevin Otoo did not disappoint during his freshman campaign and was named to the West Division All-Rookie team. The Toronto native played in all 20 games this season, finishing second in scoring (225), second in rebounds (114), second in assists (114), first in steals (41), and first in blocks (18). Otoo joins teammate Fowzi Mohamoud, along with Tyrone Dickson and R.J. Ramirez as the only Hawks to be named to the all-rookie squad.

Dating back to 1981, Humber basketball has received 45 first-team all-star selections.

The end of the banquet marks the beginning of the 2019 OCAA Championship, hosted by Georgian College. No. 5 Humber's quarter-final matchup against Georgian will be later today, with tipoff scheduled for 8 p.m. The live stream for the game can be found here.
