The Storyline
The Humber men's basketball program returns to the hardwood Friday evening, opening the 2018 campaign at Fanshawe. The Hawks begin the season on a three-game road trip before playing their home opener on Nov. 3. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.

The Opening Tip

  • Friday will mark the 765th game in regular season history for Humber. All-time, Humber owns a 543-221 (.711) record.
  • This will be the third time Humber opens the season against Fanshawe, with the Hawks winning two of those meetings.
  • Humber returns two seniors for 2018, with Curwin Elvis and Jordan Rose returning for their final season. Last year Elvis finished with a career-high 203 points, on a league-best 59.7 per cent (83-for-139) from the floor. Jordon Rose finished the season shooting 45.1 per cent (23-of-51) from 3-point range, tying the program record.
  • The Hawks return a young core of scorers, including DeQuon Cascart (11.1 PPG), Trevon Mollison (7.3 PPG), all-rookie Fowzi Mohamoud (6.5 PPG), Jordon Francis (4.4 PPG), and Jerome Gayle (3.9 PPG).

New Protocol
In May, Samson Downey was elevated to head coach of the Humber Hawks – becoming the 12th head coach in program history.

Before joining the coaching staff, Downey played five seasons for the Hawks, capturing the 2005 Provincial Championship. He led Humber to a 74-14 (.813) OCAA record during his career, retiring with the third highest career free throw percentage in program history.

Downey played for two of the best basketball minds in CCAA history, learning from Hall of Famers Mike Katz and Darrell Glenn – who won 428 games at Humber, combined.

New Faces
Eight student-athletes will don the blue and the gold for the first time this season.

  • Freshman: Salum Saady (Etobicoke), Khalid Ismail (Toronto), Jimmy Rich (Brampton), and CTA standout Kevin Otoo (Toronto).
  • Guard Micqueel Martin (North York) comes to Humber after playing with the Windsor Lancers. The Downsview S.S. graduate averaged 15.0 PPG on 41.1 per cent shooting over 20 games during the 2016-17 season.
  • Zach Marcelline (Newmarket) brings two years of OCAA experience to the team after playing for Loyalist (2012-13) and Georgian (2015-16). In 26 regular season games, Marcelline scored 190 points.
  • Fourth-year forward Jaylan Morgan (Brampton) spent two seasons at Williston State (NJCAA), where he averaged 14.0 PPG in his sophomore year. In 2016, the six-foot-five forward joined the Unversity of Saskatchewan, averaging 11.7 PPG in 18 games.
  • Forward Cy Samuels (Vaughan) played two seasons at Queen's University (2012, 2014), appearing in 37 games, averaging 5.7 PPG and 3.9 RPG.

Last Season
Humber returned to the OCAA Championship tournament for the 35th consecutive season, falling to Seneca in the provincial title game. The Hawks captured the programs 32nd OCAA medal since 1984.
