HAWKS SET RECORD WITH 7 ATHLETES AND 2 OCAA TEAMS OF THE WEEK

ETOBICOKE, ON: The Humber Hawk's banner weekend resulted in the school recording the best weekly award haul in school history. 

All in all, the Hawks came home with 2 OCAA Provincial titles (Men's & Women's Basketball), 2 CCAA National Badminton Gold Medals (Women's Singles and Men's Doubles), and a CCAA National Badminton Silver Medal (Mixed Doubles). 

As well, the Hawk badminton players were part of the OCAA 1 team that took the Team Supremacy title, which added another gold medal around the necks of the badminton players pictured below.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Olivia Lei, Humber Women's Badminton

Humber's Olivia Lei (China) won her second consecutive national gold medal in women's singles, finishing the badminton season undefeated. Lei did not lose a set at the tournament, including a 21-7, 21-14 win over Melissa Liew of VIU in the gold medal match. Prior to the competition, Lei was named the national female badminton player of the year for the second straight year.

Ryan Chow, Humber Men's Badminton

Humber's Ryan Chow (Mississauga) and Adam Dong (China) won the national gold medal in men's doubles. Chow and Dong won all seven of their matches in straight sets, including a 21-17, 21-16 win in the gold medal match against the silver medalists from Kwantlen Polytechnic University. It marks Chow's first national gold medal after three bronzes. Dong won national gold in mixed doubles in 2015.

Adam Dong, Humber Men's Badminton

Humber's Ryan Chow (Mississauga) and Adam Dong (China) won the national gold medal in men's doubles. Chow and Dong won all seven of their matches in straight sets, including a 21-17, 21-16 win in the gold medal match against the silver medalists from Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Jesse Assing, Humber Mixed Badminton

Humber's Jesse Assing (Bethany) and Phuthita Nilyok (Thailand) earned the national silver medal in mixed doubles. Assing and Nilyok's only two losses came against the eventual gold medal winning pair from NAIT, including a 21-10, 21-16 loss in the tournament finale. It marks a second straight silver medal for Assing who competed in men's singles last season

 

Phuthita Nilyok, Humber Mixed Badminton

Humber's Jesse Assing (Bethany) and Phuthita Nilyok (Thailand) earned the national silver medal in mixed doubles. Assing and Nilyok's only two losses came against the eventual gold medal winning pair from NAIT, including a 21-10, 21-16 loss in the tournament finale. It marks a second straight silver medal for Assing who competed in men's singles last season.

Tyrone Dickson, Humber Men's Basketball

Fourth-year power forward Tyrone Dickson (Scarborough) was named championship MVP at provincials, leading Humber to the OCAA title. Showing consistency on the glass, Dickson grabbed 14 rebounds in each of the three games Humber competed in. He also recorded a pair of double-doubles, including the gold medal game against Mohawk where he scored 13 points in an 86-79 win.

TEAMS OF THE WEEK

Humber, Women's Basketball

The Humber Hawks completed the perfect season in OCAA women's basketball, defending their OCAA championship. Humber outscored its opponents by an average of 19.7 points during the three games. Humber went 21-0 in 2015-16 regular- and post-season games, and currently has a 37-game win streak in OCAA competition. Humber advances to the national championship in Windsor, Ont. from March 16-19.

Humber, Men's Basketball

The Humber Hawks used home court to their advantage, winning the OCAA men's basketball title. Humber survived overtime against arch-rival Sheridan, winning 85-75 in the semifinals. Then in a rematch of the 2015 gold medal game, Humber upended defending champion Mohawk 86-79 to win its first OCAA championship since 2011. Humber now looks to defend its national title.
