Game Recap
It was seniors night in the Hawks Nest on Wednesday as Women's basketball played its last regular season game of the year. Kia Watt, Maezell Del Mundo, and Sarah Baptie were all honoured for their time with the program.
Coming off a dominant win against Redeemer on Friday, Humber got off to a solid start against another team with a record below .500.
It was a slow-paced first quarter for both squads, with the teams combining seven fouls in the opening five minutes. The crowd was expecting a physical occasion, and neither team was disappointed, scrambling for loose balls and playing heavy, physical defence.
After a slightly sluggish opening five, the game blew open in the back half of the quarter. Humber racked up 14 points in five minutes and left the quarter leading 22-16.
Marian Martin opened the scoring for Humber in the second with a deep three, her second of the game, giving Humber a nine-point lead.
The Hawks slowly built on their early lead throughout the quarter. Persia Martin-Brown was a monster down low, drawing three shooting fouls and collecting six rebounds before halftime. She would finish with ten on the night.
Humber dominated defensively for the remainder of the quarter. By halftime, Humber had scored 19 points off turnovers and held the Bruins to 13 points in the quarter. The Hawks went into halftime leading 44-29, led by 19 points from the bench.
Back from the break, Humber couldn't get anything to fall until midway through the quarter. After giving up a 7-3 run to open the third, the Hawks responded by scoring five consecutively, forcing Sheridan into a timeout.
Humber closed out the quarter calmly, outscoring Sheridan 13-7 in the defence-focused quarter and going into the final frame of the regular season leading 57-36.
Humber came out for the fourth quarter like a shot from a cannon, opening the frame with an 8-0 run in the FIRST minute of the quarter. The run didn't end there, though, as Humber would score 11 straight before Sheridan managed a single point.
Now up by more than 30 points, Humber would put on a show for the sold-out Hawks Nest, piling on 23 fourth-quarter points before the five-minute mark.
The Hawks didn't stop there, though. Humber scored a total of 34 fourth-quarter points, outscoring Sheridan 34-22 in the frame en route to a dominant 91-58 win.
