ETOBICOKE - No. 15 Women's Basketball (5-1, 1st West) beat Redeemer College (1-5, 8th West) 82-66. Kia Watt led the way for Humber, scoring 21 and adding nine rebounds and three assists. Beverly Omere and Kalani Thomas also had solid games, scoring 17 and 12 points, respectively. The story of the game was senior Kia Watt, who became the third player in program history to reach 1,000 career points.
Game Recap
Under the lights of the Hawks' Nest and riding a four-game winning streak, the Hawks came into this game feeling confident. It was a quick start for Redeemer, getting up 6-3 before Kia Watt would single-handedly get things going for the Hawks, scoring Humber's first five points. Despite the quick start, sloppy play would be Redeemer's undoing in the first quarter. Humber forced five turnovers in the first five minutes and scored more than half of their points off of those turnovers.
Redeemer would have eight turnovers by the end of the quarter, with Humber scoring 18 points off turnovers.
Humber would take the lead in dramatic fashion. A euro-step-and-one basket from Kia Watt was a historic one, as she became just the third player in team history to reach 1,000 career points.
After the bucket, Humber would go on an 11-3 run to finish the quarter leading 26-22. Watt had ten in the quarter in eight minutes, shooting 80 percent from the field. The second was a significantly lower-scoring quarter than the first, with lid having seemingly appeared over both teams baskets.
At the five-minute mark, the teams had combined for just six points, all of which went to the Royals. Humber would mount a comeback, going on a 12-0 run to close out the half. Going into the break, Humber led 38-34.
The Hawks continued to roll at the beginning of the third, scoring four points in the first minute.
The Hawks would take over midway through the quarter, scoring ten in a row with six from Beverly Omere. The run would have the Hawks see their first double-digit lead of the game; they wouldn't let that lead fall under the double-digit mark for the rest of the game.
Humber would close out the third quarter leading comfortably 64-48, scoring 26 in the quarter.
Holding a solid lead with just ten minutes to play, Humber focused on playing responsibly. They turned over the ball more than they were comfortable doing, and the team knew that all they had to do to win was hold the rock.
The Hawks' passive play was adequate for the beginning of the quarter, but after a quick 6-0 run from Redeemer, Humber had to turn the temperature back up.
After a brief offensive push from the Hawks, they re-took a defensive position and would close the game out comfortably, winning 82-66.
