Game Recap
Coming off a win against Fanshawe that many thought should have been easier, the Hawks were presented with an opportunity on Wednesday. With Humber owning the second-best defensive metrics in the conference and Conestoga averaging a measly 52 ppg this season, the statistical matchup spelt good tidings for Humber.
It was a solid first for Humber, who, after allowing the opening baskets of the game, went on a quick 9-0 run to take possession of the lead. Humber didn't back from there and would finish the quarter leading 20-16. Sarah Baptie was the story of the quarter. Number 15 drove play for the Hawks, scoring five points and adding four rebounds while playing ferocious defence on and off the ball.
Kia Watt got the Hawks going at the start of the second, cashing in a deep three late in the shot clock. From there, the Hawks were soaring. Humber went on a quick 5-0 run, opening up the quarter and gaining a solid nine-point lead.
Humber would go into halftime leading 35-23 after a significantly lower-scoring quarter for both squads, scoring 15 to Conestoga's seven.
It was undeniably Kia Watt's quarter. The fifth-year guard put up eight of the Hawks' 15 points, bringing in five rebounds in ten minutes.
Back from the break, the Condors had their pedals to the metal. After a 16-point first quarter, Conestoga knew that scoring was possible, and they ran up the Hawks in the opening minutes.
The Condors scored 13 points in the first five minutes of the quarter. Luckily for Humber, its offence stayed hot, putting up 10 in that same span, but the explosion of offence from Conestoga was significant and went right to the Condors feet.
Conestoga was solid for the remainder of the quarter, outscoring Humber 22-20 and leaving Humber leading 55-45 going into the final ten minutes. Maddy Weber was electric for Conestoga, scoring ten points in the quarter while missing just one shot.
The Hawks had to rely on their ten-point lead in the fourth as Conestoga continued to apply serious pressure on both sides of the ball.
The Hawks weren't able to pull away in the final quarter of play but would bring home the win, beating Conestoga 71-55 to stay undefeated at home.
