SEVENTH HEAVEN: MEN’S SOCCER WINS CCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI – Humber won its seventh CCAA men's soccer national title – fifth since 2012 – with a 1-0 victory over Ahuntsic at the Terry Fox SportsPlex Saturday afternoon.
On a sequence that began with Jaineil Hoilett driving deep into the Ahuntsic box, Riley Ferrazzo found the back of the net for the game's only goal.
The victory gives Humber an unprecedented 50th CCAA national title, becoming the first institution to reach the mark. It also makes Humber men's soccer the most decorated program in CCAA soccer history, becoming the first team to win seven national titles.
Humber (13-1-2) had much of the run of play, outshooting the Indiens, finding a few scoring chances in the second half. Off a corner kick, a Hoilett back-heel shot was saved by the Ahuntsic keeper, followed by another brilliant save off of a Federico Leal strike from outside the 18-yard box. The Humber defence was spot-on, giving the Indiens next to nothing on the way to Karman Singh earning his fourth career CCAA postseason clean sheet.
In the 28th minute, Jaineil Hoilett dribbled by three Indien defenders before crossing a ball that found the head of Luca Baldassarre.
Baldassarre's pass found a sprinting Riley Ferrazzo near the goal line, drilling the shot in the right side of the net.
Ferrazzo, a freshman and 2018 Central Division Defensive Player of the Year, recorded his fourth goal of the year and second game-winner of his collegiate career.
Karman Singh and Stavros Badunas were named to the championship all-tournament team, while Jaineil Hoilett became the fifth Humber player to be named championship MVP.
Under the guidance of head coach Michael Aquino, Humber has captured four national titles and is 12-0 all-time at the championship tournament.
