VAUGHAN, ON: The Humber Hawks men's soccer team (2-0, 1st Central) found themselves in an unusual place on Wednesday night during their home opener against the upstart University of Toronto (UTM) Eagles (0-1), as the first half ended in a 1-1 tie. The Hawks then flew out of the gate, exploding for four unanswered goals in the second half on their way to a 5-1 win.
Humber did start strong, controlling the play and eventually scoring the opener by the feet of sniper Luca Baldasarre, at the 9:23 mark.
Just seconds later, The Hawks were unable to score on a 2-0, having the ball bounce off the turf into the corner off a bad pass. It was at this point that the pitch seemed to turn in the Eagles favour. UTM pushed forward continuously, and after a near miss, they scored on a nice cross to Jamari Whyte at the 33 minute mark.
As the halftime whistle blew, it was the visitors that seemed to be energized and ready for a strong second half run.
Credit the Hawks coaches for making the necessary adjustments, as Humber came out at the beginning of the second, the same way they started the game.
In under three minutes, at the 61 minute mark, Humber scored three times. Nicholas Machado made it 2-1, and then Jordan Piccinin increased the spread to 3-1. Jaineil Holiett was up next with his tally and the game was pretty much salted away at that point.
After a takedown during extra time, Humber was given a penalty kick, and Baldasarre stepped up and scored his second of the game, and third of the season. Just after the ball crossed the goal line, the official's whistle indicated full-time had been completed.
Nick Frenati, who stopped two of the three shots he faced, was credited with the win. Humber directed eight shots on the Eagles keeper.
Osman Hussein was selected as the Hawk Nation Player of the Game.

Humber will travel to Kitchener next Wednesday for a tilt against the Conestoga Condors.
