BRAMPTON - What better way to start the season than with two road victories? After defeating Niagara in their debut of the 2024-25 Ontario Colleges Athletic Associations (OCAA) season last Sunday, the Humber Hawks went to Brampton Wednesday and overcame the Sheridan Bruins 79-68 in a tough game that was decided in the final minutes. With a 2-0 record, coach Omar Miles' team is preparing for their home opener on Oct. 30th against the Mohawk Mountaineers. Malik Grant finished with a game-high 20 points, while Lucas Lewis and Isaiah Brady-Clarke added 12 points each.

Game Recap

The hallmark of the game was balance. From the first minutes on the court, both Bruins and Hawks sought to find their rhythm, but both teams made numerous errors. Sheridan, making its debut in the competition, tried to assert its home-court advantage but took too many unsuccessful perimeter shots.

On the other hand, the Hawks played a more physical game, penetrating the paint and looking for layups to finish most of their plays. At the same time, their defence pressured the home team, which couldn't find a way to escape this trap. The better strategy allowed the visitors to lead the scoreboard throughout the game.

Even so, it wasn't easy. The difference was minimal in the first three quarters (21-17, 20-19, and 17-16). Even though they were always behind, the Bruins never let the Hawks pull away. In the final quarter, Sheridan came within just three points but couldn't tie the score. In the end, in desperation, they committed multiple turnovers and handed the ball to the Hawks, who won by an 11-point margin. Despite the win, the Hawks struggles from deep, finishing two-for-21 (9.5 percent) from beyond the arc.

The victory was thanks to an inspired night from several players, such as Malik Grant, who led the team with 20 points, four assists, and eight rebounds. Isaiah Brady-Clarke (12P, 2A, and 6R) and Lucas Lewis (12P and 9R) also contributed decisively to the result. On the Bruins' side, the top scorers were Samuel Nwaobi (19P, 6R), Dallas Francis (13P, 2R), and Travis Clouden, who finished the game with a double-double (12P, 11R).

  • Malik Grant recorded his third career 20-point game for Humber.
  • Twelve players recorded a point for Humber in the win.
