Humber Curling Wins Two Silver Medals in Manitoba

With files from the CCAA

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE – After five days on the ice competing for a national title, the Humber men's and women's curling teams finished the 2020 CCAA Curling Canada Championships with a silver medal.

The Humber men's team posed a serious challenge to the reigning national champion Concordia Thunders defence, narrowly missing out on the gold. The Hawks seemed to be in firm control of the match leading 5-1 through four ends, but Concordia got a pair in the fifth and sixth to tie up the match. Humber pulled ahead again but the Thunder stole three points in the ninth to lead 9-7 heading into the tenth end. Not to be outdone, Humber then scored the necessary two points to force extra ends. Now with the hammer, Concordia clinched the championship with the final shot of the match.

The Douglas Royals successfully defended their title after a 10-1 victory over the Humber women's team. Douglas jumped out to an early 7-1 lead on the Hawks at the halfway point of the final. A steal of three more in the sixth was enough for the Royals to retain the crown.

For the men's team, it's their third national medal since 2016 (one gold, two silver), while the women have captured three silver medals since 2014.

Zack Shurtleff, Matthew Garner, and Emerson Steffler we named first team all-stars, while coach Clancy Grandy was honoured with the Curling Coaching Award.

Brittany Elson received a first team all-star selection for the women's team, while Parker Doig received second team honours.
