HAWKS SWEEP ALGONQUIN AND ADVANCE TO OCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

By Nick Suddes

ETOBICOKE, ON:The Humber Hawks Men's Volleyball team (15-3, 2nd West) played the visiting Algonquin Thunder (7-11, 7th West) in a crossover playoff matchup Saturday afternoon at the Humber North Campus Gym. Humber took the matchup easily winning in straight sets (25-15, 25-21, 25-19) to earn their spot in the upcoming OCAA Championship tournament.

Humber was intent to get this match over quickly from the jump. They came out firing on both ends finishing 32 percent of their kills in the first set, while holding the Thunder to a paltry 5 kills on a 5% clip.

Algonquin had their best chance to win a set in the second, keeping the score close for most of the set before finally succumbing to Humbers' attack late. They fed the ball to Jarrod McNaughton for much of the game. He was clearly the best Thunder player on the floor in this matchup, finishing with a team-high 12 points all coming by way of kills.

The third set was merely a technicality as Humber superior firepower overwhelmed Algonquin throughout the match. The Hawks put down their 13 kills at a game-high 37 percent in the frame, punching their ticket to the OCAA Championship in less than a week.

Both Dylan Devecseri and Clayton Blanchette led the way for Humber in the match. Devecseri continued his impressive first season with the Hawks collecting double-digit kills for the ninth time this season, finishing with a team-high 14 points all coming off kills. Blanchette was just as impressive in his performance picking up 12 points (nine kills, three aces) and led the team with six digs on the day.

Humber will now shift their focus towards their opening game at the 2018 OCAA Championship. This year's tournament is being held at Georgian College in Barrie with the first game of the tournament scheduled for 1:00pm on February 22.
