ETOBICOKE, ON: The Humber Hawks men's volleyball team (5-2, 2nd West) rebounded from a come from behind loss in the first set (25-27) by the Niagara Knights (4-2, 3rd West) to sweep the next three sets (25-18, 25-17, 25-19) to win the match 3-1.
This was the Hawks fourth consecutive win, after a 1-2 start.
As mentioned above, it was the visiting Knights that played the role of spoiler in the first set, bouncing back from a 24-21 deficit to take the set. It was a combination of solid blocking and a few Hawk hitting errors that was the difference.
The next three sets it was all Humber. Spurred on by a crowd of over 200 fans, the Hawks controlled the rest of the match from start to finish in each set. The three sets had a little bit of everything, multiple service runs, key blocks and devastating kills.
"Losing a very winnable first set was a bit disappointing", said Hawk head coach Wayne Wilkins, "but our response was something to get excited about."
Reigning OCAA Athlete of the Week Dylan Devecseri had another big night, as he led all scorers on the night with 20 offensive points – 15 kills, 3 aces, 2 kills. Kamyn Wilkins and Clayton Blanchette chipped in with 17 and 11 points, respectively. No Niagara Knights player was able to break into double digits in scoring.
The Hawks will now end the first half of the regular season next weekend at home, as the Cambrian Golden Shield and Boreal Vipers pay a visit to the Humber Athletic Centre.
