No. 12 MEN'S VOLLEYBALL ENTER BREAK ON SIX-GAME WIN STREAK

ETOBICOKE, Ont -- No. 12 Humber men's volleyball (7-2, 2nd West) finished the first half of the 2017-18 volleyball season with a win at home over the Boreal Vipers (0-10, 10th West) in straight sets (25-18, 25-11, 25-17) to push their win streak to six games.

The Hawks fell behind early in the first set as they trailed the Vipers 7-2. Humber would battle back to tie the game at ten a piece before a putting together a 5-0 run. The Vipers would cut the deficit to a little as two at 17-15 but were unable to get any closer. Humber finished the set on a 5-1 run to take a competitive opening set 25-18.

The Hawks put together their best set in the second as they led wire to wire after taking a quick 5-1 lead. Humber would build their lead to ten following two consecutive aces by Setter Jake Gomes to blow this one open. Boreal was unable to put together a late rally, as the Hawks would add two more aces in the set and take this one quickly, by a score of 25-11.

In the third set, both teams would trade points early on as they sat tied at seven a side. Humber took the lead for good thanks to a 5-0 run, highlighted by Alex Bowden's three straight serving aces. The Vipers tried to keep pace with the Hawks for the rest of the set getting the Humber lead to just two at one point, but that would be as close as they would get, dropping the final set 25-17 and the match in straight sets.

First-year outside hitter Alex Bowden was the only player to finish in double figures for the Hawks leading the way with 11 points (six kills, four serving aces, one block).

First-year setter Jake Gomes was named the Hawks Nation Player of the Game as he set two new career highs in points and aces finishing with six points all coming by way of serving aces.

As a team, the Hawks set a new season high for serving aces in a game with 13 in the match.

With the victory, Humber moves to 7-2 on the season and are now tied with Redeemer for second place in the OCAA West Division standings. With the loss, Boreal moves to 0-16 all-time against the Hawks and sit last in the West Division at 0-10.

The Hawks will open up the second half at home on Jan. 14 against the St. Clair Saints (5-4, 4th West) with tip-off scheduled for 3 p.m at the Humber North Campus Gym. Catch the game live or on HSN 1.
