ETOBICOKE, ON: After surviving a fiercely contested first set, the Humber Hawks men's volleyball team (13-2, 2nd West) took control and extended their win streak to twelve consecutive games, defeating the Sheridan Bruins (6-10, 8th West) in three straight sets Sunday afternoon (30-28, 25-19, 25-17).
The first set saw the teams evenly matched at the start, before five straight Bruins points led by Michael Kong's serving put Humber behind by five. The Hawks fought back hard, building rallies off Kamyn Wilkins and Clayton Blanchette and pulling past the Bruins on a Dylan Devecseri slam. Ahead of the Bruins by four points, the Hawks saw their lead vanish as their opponent's rallied and took a 24-23 lead late in the set. The Hawks refused to yield, however, valiantly fighting back and taking the set down to the wire. Finally, with a Wilkins serving ace the Hawks sealed the deal, taking the first set 30-28.
The Hawks struck first in the second set, taking a narrow lead over the Bruins and maintaining it throughout the set. Building on their lead through rallies led by Andrew Blakey and Rady Kim, the Hawks grabbed a seven-point lead halfway through the set. Two separate three-point Bruins rallies would cut into this lead, however, and the Hawks soon found themselves barely hanging on with a one-point lead. After Kim halted the Bruins' momentum in its tracks, the Hawks took charge once again, riding Kim's serving and great play from Devecseri to build a four-point rally and come out on top, winning the second set 25-19.
Two straight serving aces from Wilkins highlighted the start of the third set as the Hawks took another early lead. The Hawks continued their dominance by scoring five straight points off Blanchette's serving to lead the Bruins by six. After a pair of Bruins points, the Hawks would start another rally, increasing their lead to eight. Though the Bruins would attempt to narrow this deficit, again bringing it down to six points, they could not climb back into the game. A final kill from Blanchette capped off the Hawk's best set of the day, taking the third 25-17 and winning the game in three sets.
Kamyn Wilkins, who led the Hawks with 20 points (13 kills, six serving aces, one block) was named the Hawks Nation Player of the Game. Dylan Devecseri also hit double digits with 18 points (15 kills, three blocks). Rady Kim led the team with 13 digs.
Michael Kong of the Bruins led his team in points with ten (nine kills, one serving ace), while Liam Butchereit had 16 digs.
With the win, the Hawks improve to a 13-2 record on the season, winning their twelfth straight game, while the Bruins fall to a 6-10 record with the loss.
Up next for the Hawks are the Boreal Vipers (0-16, 10th West) in a road matchup on Saturday. Start time is scheduled for 8 p.m.
