HAWKS SHERIDAN JOINS RUGBY CANADA’S UNIVERSITY ALL STARS

After a successful National University Sevens Rugby Championships at Langford's Westhills Stadium in March, Rugby Canada is pleased to announce the University All-Stars from the men's competition.

The 13-man squad is comprised from five universities with Tony LaCarte and Nanyak Dala named as coaches. The University All-Stars will take part in the Langford Sevens on May 18 in an eight-team tournament. The event will be held at Westhills Stadium.

"There are a number of very good players coming through the university sevens ranks," Men's National Sevens head coach Liam Middleton said. "Through the advent of this University representative team we are offering players a opportunity to enter our pathway which leads to competition for National team places."

The all-star selections for the University Sevens are also part of a new initiative to recognize the tournament and provide an opportunity for university athletes to demonstrate their abilities on the big stage.

"It's a great pathway for guys who play university sevens," Dala said. "It's a great chance to show yourself against other opposition and it's also a good opportunity to show coaches if you can take it to the next level.

"Obviously they are all very talented players since they've been chosen for the team. It's whether they can put it all together and step up now."

The University Sevens began in 2011 as part of a plan to give more opportunities to university rugby players and to build a pathway towards National team consideration. The last four events have taken place in Langford after the original tournament was played at UBC's Thunderbird Stadium.

UVIC won this year's final, beating UBC 17-12.  The Vikes' Luke McCloskey scored a try in the final, taking his tournament tally to 10, good for tied first overall, and was second overall in tournament point scoring with 50, trailing UBC's Jordan Best (54).

UVIC have won four of the five cup finals since the tournament's inauguration. Western University won the 2012 tournament.
