BLAINVILLE, QC -- The Humber cross country program will be heading to Quebec for the 2017 CCAA Cross Country Championships, held at the Equestrian Park in Blainville. The women's 6k race will begin at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12 and the men's 8k race will follow at 12:30 p.m. The women's team qualified by virtue of finishing in second place at the provincial championship; while the men nabbed a spot with their fourth-place finish at Fanshawe Conservation Area.
Humber at CCAAs
At the 2016 CCAA Cross Country Championships, Kaitlin Shuvera placed tenth in the field of 102, posting a time of 19:32 in the 6k race and finished as the fastest Ontario competitor in the field at Sault College. As a team, the women's program finished seventh in the field of 15.
The women's best overall finish at the national championship came in 2011 when Vicky Siemon led the program to its first and only team title while claiming an individual silver medal with a time of 18:12.
The men's best overall team finish came in 2014 when Daniel Bright led Humber to its first and only national championship. The program's top individual showing at the event came in 2005, when All-Canadian Colin Murray-Lawson placed second overall in Peterborough, Ont., finishing in 27:33.
About the CCAA Cross Country Championships
20 teams will compete in the CCAA Women's Cross Country Championship, with 17 individual females competing as well. On the men's side, there will be 21 teams and 12 individual runners.
Blainville Equestrian Park
The 2017 CCAA Cross Country Championships, hosted by Collège Lionel-Groulx, will take place at the Blainville Equestrian Park. Located centrally n the Lower Laurentians just 30 km from Montréal, Blainville is a dynamic municipality renowned for the wide range of activities and cultural sporting and recreational events it proposes to resident and visitors alike throughout the year.
Equipped with a cycle path network extending over 50 km (not counting the 7.4 km stretch of the Route Verte that crosses the city north to south) and made up of 40% of green zones and recreational space, Blainville constitutes a city of choice for outdoor aficionados.
This location, which is already home to an annual cross-country competition, is a mixed-terrain course, which will include gravel, grass and sand.
Last Time Out
Competing at the 2017 OCAA Cross Country Championships at Fanshawe Conservation Area in London, Ont., the Humber women's program finished second place overall, its 11th straight season finishing on the provincial podium. Kaitlin Shuvera finished fourth overall in 22:46, leading a group of five Humber runners who each finished in the top-30 of the race.
In the men's 8k race, Humber finished fourth overall behind Aaron Veenstra's ninth-place finish, with a 27:43.7.
In the Rankings
The Humber women's program moved up to No. 6 in the national rankings released on Oct. 31 by the CCAA, while the men's program moved up four spots to No. 9.
At the Helm
Monique Haan and Teresa Arnini are in their 13th and 11th season, respectively, and during their tenure, the Hawks have captured 12 OCAA women's team medals and eight men's team medals.
