HAWKS PUSHED TO FOUR SETS BUT REMAIN UNDEFEATED

By: Natalie Stoberman

The Hawks took home a four set win over the Sheridan Bruins 25-17, 25-16, 28-30 and 25-20. This brings the Hawks to only three sets lost on the season. They had strong performances from Thalia Hanniman who notched 16 kills (18 total points), and Alley Newman who swung for 13 kills (19 total points). Brynne Coleman, returning from a season and a half injury, recorded an impressive 10 kills.

Humber got through the Bruins relatively quickly in their first game back from their training camp in Hawaii. Setter Brittany Vanderlaan racked up 20 assists as she set up outside hitter Thalia Hanniman with nine kills and Brynne Coleman-Spence with five kills through two sets. Humber took both sets 25-17 and 25-16.

However, the Bruins flipped the switch in the third set and left the Hawks in the dust for majority of the set. Humber tried to chip away while Sheridan was in the home stretch of winning the set by capitalizing on court errors. The Bruins led by as much as 22-16 but the Hawks battled with crisp passing and digging to pull ahead 23-22. The set felt like it would never end with the handful of rallies that kept the Nest in suspense, but the Bruins gave the Hawks their third lost set of the season by 30-28. Coleman-Spence, outside Brooke Kinnaird and middle Alley Newman stepped up with a combined 10 kills to keep the Hawks in the game.

The Hawks meant business to make up for that set. Hanniman exploded for four kills on the set to get the offence rolling. But the Hawks were able to build an aggressive attack through solid passing from libero Kyla Wilkins. The Hawks routed the Bruins 25-20 despite a great effort from Sheridan.

Next up for the Hawks is a road trip to Niagara College to take on the Knights on Jan. 20 at 6 p.m.
