HAWKS WOMEN VIE FOR RETURN TO THE OCAA PODIUM
BREAKING NEWS! Hawks advance to medal round on Saturday
Tight defence and good ball movement lifted the Humber Hawks women's soccer team to the second day of the OCAA Provincial Championships.
After a few close calls in some tournaments this indoor season, the ladies have had their ups and downs. The team struggled after losing players since outdoor and also to injuries but managed to come together just in time for provincials.
The Hawks were also trying to keep their three game shutout streak still alive after not allowing a goal at regionals.
The ladies day began early Friday morning when Humber took on Georgian College. In a hard fought game the Hawks were able to come out victorious in a 1-0 win.
In the indoor tournaments it's crucial to start your day off with a victory and with the Hawks doing so the team set themselves up nicely for the remainder of the day.
In the second game the Hawks were taking on the Conestoga Condors. In a very spirited contest which involved both teams throwing everything towards the net, both teams were unable to beat the opposing keeper as the game ended in a 0-0 tie.
The tie once again helped the ladies as the team was able to at least walk away with a point while keeping a positive goal differential which the OCAA uses as a tool for whoever advances in the case of a tie.
In the final matchup of the day for the Hawks a tie was all that was needed.
The ladies were up against a tough task in the final game of day one playing the Fanshawe Falcons. In another tough game the Hawks were able to come out with another scoreless draw meaning the team advanced to the semi finals on Saturday.
Humber will look to keep their impressive defensive effort alive on Saturday as the team hasn't allowed a goal for six straight OCAA games.
The ladies are now set to take on the Seneca Sting in the semi finals with kick-off being at 10 a.m.
ANCASTER, ON: The Humber Hawks women's indoor soccer team advanced to the 2016 OCAA Indoor Soccer Championships by way of their regional championship first place finish. They are hoping this finish will catapult them back to the podium and a 2016 OCAA medal. Humber was shut out last year, for the first time since the 2006-07 season. In this time period, they snared 4 golds, 2 silvers and a bronze.
Their pool will include another first place team and two second place squads. Teams will play a round robin within their division and then the top two teams from each pool will play in semi-finals, then medal games.
