ETOBICOKE – Humber men's basketball (4-3, 6th West) escaped the North Campus Gym Sunday with a tight victory over the Lambton Lions (2-4, 8th West), 85-84. All 40 minutes were needed to determine the winner with 15 lead changes throughout the game, but Dwayne Lambert-Cadore hit three clutch free throws with 1.7 seconds remaining to secure the second straight victory for the defending national champions.

Dwayne Lambert-Cadore finished with a career-high 33 points in the victory, while Romeo Osas Joshua recorded 15 points and eight rebounds. Rookie Devonte Campbell rounded out Humber's double-digit scorers, finishing with 14 points and ten rebounds.

Game Recap

A back-and-forth offensive battle in the first set the tone for the rest of the game, as both teams exchanged buckets through the first five minutes of play. Lambton used a 10-0 run to take a seven-point lead with 4:35 remaining in the opening frame, but Humber's high-octane offence responded with a 13-0 run of their own to end the quarter leading, 23-21.

Sydney Kabongo began the second with two triples to extend Humber's lead to seven - its largest of the game. Despite playing to an overtime loss the night before, the Lions played with energy, and their press forced the Hawks into easy turnovers, creating easy transition buckets. Devonte Campbell recorded nine points in the quarter, but the Hawks went into the break trailing, 43-42.

Back-to-back buckets to begin the third quarter from Romeo Osas Joshua and Dwayne Lambert-Cardore gave the Hawks the lead, as the duo combined to score 18 of Humber's 24 points in the frame. Humber's second-half adjustments had the Hawks coming out of the gate flying as the offence shot 55.6 per cent (ten-of-19) from the floor, and took a lead they would not relinquish until late in the fourth quarter.

Lambton regained the lead when Tyrelle Miller hit a jumper with 3:28 remaining in the game, however, Lambo made it short-lived with a quick drive and a nice floater in the paint less than ten seconds later. With time running down, Lambton's Journee Joseph hit two free throws with six seconds remaining, giving the Lions a two-point lead and forcing a timeout from head coach Omar Miles.

After the timeout, Humber inbounded and rode the hot hand, as Dwayne Lambert-Cadore was called upon to take the game-winning shot. With 1.7 seconds remaining, Lambo was fouled behind the three-point line and had a chance to win the game from the charity stripe. The Rexdale native did not flinch with the game on the line, knocking down all three free-throws to win the game for the Hawks, 85-84.
