HAWKS SUFFER MID-GAME LETDOWNS ON WAY TO TWO LOSSES

CAMROSE, ALBERTA: The Humber Hawks women's curling team, OCAA champions, opened the 2017 with two tough losses in games that they had leads at the mid-point break.

In the first match of the day, Humber pushed out to a 4-2 lead and seemed in control of all aspects of the match against the familiar Niagara Knights. A steal of one and then three was Humber's undoing as they dropped the 7-4 decision. The tipping point was the ninth end, when the Knights stole the three to close out the match. The Niagara squad scored five unanswered points after the sixth end.

It got even more frustrating for the Hawks in the second match, an 11-7 win for the Lakeland Rustlers. Humber led by a huge four points after just three ends of play, 5-1. After a string of steals, the Lakeland foursome took a lead after six. In fact, the Rustlers outscored the Hawks 10-2 after the third. Humber consistently was short, and this came back to haunt them as the visitors put rock after rock into the house. With the rocks that came up short, Humber's skip had to deal with multiple guards late in the game and had little opening to attack the Rustler's stones.
