HAWKS SPLIT OPENING DAY AT 2017 CCAA NATIONALS

CAMROSE, ALBERTA: The Humber Hawks men's curling team, defending CCAA champions, opened the 2017 with a tough loss but then responded with a solid win in the second match of the day.

In the first match of the day, Humber was unable to find any momentum on their way to an 8-2 loss to Lakeland College of Alberta. In fact, it was the Hawks that extended their hands, conceding defeat, after the eighth of the ten end game. The turning point, actually turned out to be the game changer for the winning Rustlers team came into play in the seventh end. Humber, down 6-2, had an open takeout to score three and tighten the match to 6-5. But the Hawk's final rocked just chipped off the visitor's stone, and scored a steal of one for Lakeland. A potential 6-5 game turned into a 7-2 blowout.

Needing a win to get back quickly into the playoff conversation, the Hawks ran into the familiar faces from Hamilton's Mohawk College. The Humber squad did not disappoint as they turned in an almost perfect game on their way to a 5-2 win. After they moved ahead by three just after the break, the Hawk foursome rode that score through the last four ends. They did not allow the Mountaineers a chance to score one, let alone the three needed to grab a tie.
