ETOBICOKE, ON: The Humber Hawks have advanced to the 2017 OCAA Championships by way of a 100-75 win on Saturday night at home, over the St. Lawrence Vikings.
St. Lawrence were playing with heavy hearts, due to the sudden passing on Friday night of teammate Jermaine Edwards. Respectfully, there was a moment of silence prior to the tip of the basketball game.
The visiting Vikings came out flying early, and raced to an early 8-2 first quarter lead. It took the second rotation of the Hawks to spur the Humber squad back into the game. Baskets by Curwin Elvis and Trevon Mollison were key in bringing Humber into a lead.
From the eight minute mark of the first, until the 7 minute mark of the second quarter, Humber went on a large 19-4 run. St. Lawrence brought the lead to six, but a technical foul to the Vikings coach helped swing the Hawks back out to a double digit lead. A huge 3 at the buzzer brought the visitors to within eight at the half.
Gibson Eduful led the Hawks at the half, with nine points. Ancil Martin and Trevon Mollison checked in with eight apiece.
The Hawks played a consistent third quarter, and when the third stanza was over Humber extended its lead to 68-52. As he has done for five years with the Hawks, Gibson Eduful was the" straw that stirs the drink", as he poured in point after point in the quarter.
The fourth was nothing short of a blur, with Humber having its biggest output in a quarter on the day, scoring 32. With Humber in possession at the end, the buzzer sounded and the scoreboard indicated a 100-75 Hawk win.
Trevon Mollison led the Hawks on the day, with 25 points. He shot 7 for 11 on the night, and this included being 2 for 2 from beyond the arc. Eduful, playing in his last game at home as a Hawk, dropped 24. Three other Hawks scored in double figures. Ancil Martin had 14, while Curwin Elvis and Tyrone Dickson hit for 11 and 10 points, respectively.
For the visiting Vikings. Jaz Bains and Taylor Reddick hit for 19 points, while Donald Gibson contributed 18.
There was no doubt that Eduful was named the Hawk Nation Player of the Game.
