INNISFIL, Ont. - The first medals of the 50th season of the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) will be awarded this week as the top collegiate golfers in the province compete at the OCAA Golf Championships presented by belairdirect.

The scheduled 54-hole tournament runs Monday through Wednesday at National Pines Golf Club in Innisfil, Ont., and is hosted by Georgian College.

Both defending OCAA individual champions return to provincials, eying another podium finish. Niagara's Evan Littlefield (Thunder Bay) was the top male last year, winning by two strokes after carding a final round 69. Teammate Lorelle Weavers (Burlington) won women's gold by four shots, her second career OCAA medal after taking silver in 2014.

Littlefield will have the 2015 co-bronze medalists to contend with. Niagara's Josiah Dixon (Bognor) and Humber's Christian McCullough (Richmond Hill) will look to improve on their third-place standing from a year ago. McCullough is no stranger to gold, winning the men's individual title in 2013.

All three females who finished on the podium in 2015 are returning to provincials. Georgian's Emilie Tyndall (Kirkland, Que.) took silver last year, and will look to use the "home" course to her advantage. Last year's bronze medalist Shiela McKeen (Ottawa) is also back representing Humber.

A total of 85 golfers will represent 15 Ontario college campuses, including Confederation, Durham, Fanshawe, Georgian, Humber, Lakehead (Orillia), Lambton, Mohawk, Niagara, St. Clair, St. Lawrence (Brockville, Cornwall and Kingston), Sault and Seneca.

The tournament consists of three 18-hole rounds, weather permitting. The male and female player posting the lowest gross score through 54 holes will earn their respective individual championship.

Men's teams consist of four or five golfers, with the top four individual scores of each round contributing to the total team score. Women's teams consist of two or three golfers, with the top two individual scores of each round contributing to their total score. Schools with the lowest aggregate of gross scores after 54 holes win the respective team titles.

Niagara is the defending men's team champion, having ended Humber's nine straight OCAA banners. Georgian is the reigning OCAA women's team champion, with Humber taking the women's national team title in 2015.

This will mark the 50th time the OCAA will award golf medals as one of its inaugural varsity sports back in 1967. That year, Mohawk won the men's team title, with St. Clair's Dan Hasson winning individual gold.

Designed by Thomas McBroom, National Pines Golf Club was third in Golf Digest's ranking of best new courses in Canada. It is 7,013 yards in length, a great walking course that predominantly features Love Creek which comes into play 14 times during a round. Facilities include a three-level 7,000 square-foot clubhouse, a three-tiered grass deck with 15 hitting stations, seven target greens, and a putting green. National Pines was home to the 2007 and 2008 Canadian Tour Championship and the 1995 Ontario Amateur.

OCAA golfers will participate in a practice round on Sunday before teeing off for real on Monday. Rainy conditions have hampered much of the short OCAA golf season, but the weather is expected to be cooperative over the three-day event.

Daily results at the championships will be available online via the championship website and OCAA.com.
