Holland Walk-Off Highlights Day One of the NCBC Tournament

ETOBICOKE – Day one of the National College Baseball Championship concluded Thursday evening, with the Humber Hawks and Holland Hurricanes finishing the day with perfect 2-0 records to advance directly to the semifinal round.

Game One: Humber 2, TRU 1
The Hawks were able to squeeze out a close win over the Wolfpack, with Cam Hibbs picking up the win in relief for Humber.

Tyler Moskalyk threw a complete game for TRU, allowing two runs – one earned – in six innings of work.

With the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, Josh Wright tried to score on a passed ball to tie the game. Catcher Jeff Siemms recovered quickly, making a nice throw to closer Riley Pollard to nab Wright at home to win the game.

Game Two: Holland 10, Durham 3
The Hurricanes put up eight runs in the first inning, putting the game out of reach early against the 2019 OCAA silver medalists. Right-fielder Chase Brown finished the game with two hits and two RBIs, while Tyler Johnston threw five innings for the win, allowing one run on five hits.

Game Three: Durham 7, Lionel-Groulx 1
The Lords responded to their loss by scoring runs to begin the game. They’d go on to add three over the next three innings, easily grabbing the second seed in Pool A.

Jake Storry fired seven complete innings for the win, scattering two hits while striking out seven. Left fielder Connor May picked up two hits and drove in two runs, while Johnathon McIntosh swiped two bags.

Game Four: TRU 10, John Abbott 0 – 5 innings
The Wolfpack’s offence erupted in game four, ending the game in five innings. 2018 NCBC tournament all-star Liam Shibata hit the first home run of the day, while Kurtis Wall had a team-high two RBIs in the game.

Game Five: Holland 5, Lionel-Groulx 4
With a two-hour time limit, this game went into the seventh inning using international rules. With runners placed at first and second, the Nordiques loaded the bases on an error with none out. Holland pitcher Brett Brittany never wavered and struck out the next three batters to end the threat.

In the bottom of the inning, Curtis McGregor hit a bases-loaded single to score Luke Robison to win the game.

Game Six: Humber 6, John Abbott 0
Freshman starter was the story in game six, throwing a complete-game shutout against the Islanders. The righty threw seven innings, scattering two hits and two walks while striking out a career-high 13 hitters.

Stephen Narhabeki paced the Humber offence with three hits, while Aiden Murphy hit his first career home run in the win.

With the conclusion of pool play, Lionel-Groulx and TRU will open the playoff rounds Oct. 25 at 10 a.m. Durham and John Abbott will follow in the second quarter-final at 1 p.m. All four games will be streamed live on the Hawks Sports Network.
