HISTORY IS MADE AS HAWKS SWEEP SENECA

VAUGHAN, ON: On Pink in the Park Day, the Humber Hawks softball (8-8, 5th OCAA) program extended their home winning streak to six games Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep over the Seneca Sting (0-16, 7th OCAA).

On a damp afternoon at Concord Regional Park, the Hawks returned home in a fight to keep their playoff hopes alive.  The ultra-competitive OCAA has five teams currently fighting for four playoff spots and Humber came into the day knowing anything short of a sweep was a failure.

After starting out slowly, the Hawks managed to get a run on the board first in the second inning.  Meaghan Murphy (Brampton), who narrowly missed her first career homerun, came around to score on a single from catcher Terah Camilleri (Streetsville).

As the rain continued to fall, the Hawks lead slowly grew until the sixth inning where they scored five runs, capped off by a walk-off single from freshman Jacklyn Yewchyn (LaSalle) to win the game 10-0.  Elisa Gregoris (Mississauga) paced the way for Humber offensively as she collected three hits – two doubles – and three RBI's.

The biggest story in game one came from Humber's ace Myranda Pierson (Toronto).  The second-year pitcher carved up the Seneca hitters, picking up her fifth win of the season.  She also struck out seven while giving up zero hits, becoming the first Humber Hawk to ever throw a no-hitter in OCAA action.  It was also her fourth complete game of the season.

Game two was very similar to game one, with Humber winning 10-0 in six innings.  The offensive leaders for Humber in game two were Kaitlyn Pitek (Whitby) and Alicia Pellizzoni (Missisauga). Both led the team with two RBI's in the game. For Pellizzoni, those were her first career OCAA RBI's.

The OCAA's ERA leader got the start for Humber on the rubber and Rachel Matheson-Green (Oakville) continued to do what she's done all season long.  The freshman threw five shutout innings, allowing three hits while striking out three, winning her third game of the season.  Briana Donaldson (Gorrie) came in and threw a shutout inning in relief.

Hitting in the cleanup spot today, Elisa Gregoris did not disappoint.  The veteran outfielder finished the day with four runs scored, four RBI's, and four doubles.

Up next for the Hawks is matchup with the Conestoga Condors (10-6, 4th OCAA) on Sunday, October 2, a doubleheader that will have major playoff implications. Game one is scheduled for 1:00pm at Concord Regional Park.
