HAWKS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER WITH CONESTOGA

KITCHENER, ON: The Humber Hawks softball (1-5, 6th OCAA) program split their doubleheader Friday night with the Conestoga Condors (3-5, 5th OCAA).

In game one, the Hawks jumped out to an early lead in the fourth after veterans Terah Camilleri (Streetville) and Hilary Redrup (Carlisle) hit back-to-back singles to drive in two runs.

After Conestoga tied the game in the fifth, Humber's bats came to life and the Hawks scored four more runs.  After Redrup recorded her second RBI of the game, freshman Jenna Hillman (Tecumseh) came in off the bench as a pinch hitter with runners on the corners.  The smooth swinging shortstop drove a fastball deep into the gap, clearing the bases and coming around for the inside the park home run.

Hawks' ace Myranda Pierson (Toronto) went the distance in the 6-2 win, allowing seven hits and two earned runs over seven innings of work.  The hard throwing righty picked up her first win of the season and the 11th of her career.

Game two was a slugfest that Conestoga eventually won 16-15 in extra innings.  After two innings, the Condors had an 8-2 lead and appeared to have the second game all but locked up.  With their backs against the wall, the Hawks pulled of the unthinkable.  Humber sent 15 batters to the dish in the third, scoring ten runs on 11 hits, highlighted by Aaliyah Davidson's (Brampton) three-run triple.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, Conestoga scored four runs in the sixth, tying the game 14-14 and eventually forced extra innings.  International rules are used in OCAA softball, so each extra frame begins with a runner on second base and no outs.

In the eighth, Camilleri put on a heroic display after she drove in the go-ahead run right after fouling two inside pitches off her foot.  The Hawks were unable to keep the lead and Conestoga walked off the three-hour marathon in the ninth, winning 16-15.

Despite the loss, freshman Rachel Matheson-Green (Oakville) was impressive in her third OCAA appearance.  Coming on in relief, Matheson-Green gave up two runs (one earned) and two hits in 3.2 innings of work.  Pierson finished off the game and took the loss, despite not giving up an earned run.

At the dish, Hillman finished the day with five hits and five RBI's.  Freshman Sarah Franchetto (Guelph) collected four hits and four RBI's.  Third-year infielder Bonnie Gillingham (Brampton) also had four hits and is now only eight hits away from tying Natalie Stoberman for most hits in program history.

There will be very little turnaround for the Hawks before their next games.  Humber's home opener is Saturday, September 17 against the Mohawk Mountaineers (2-2, 4th OCAA).  Game one is slated for 1:00pm, with game two set to begin around 3:00pm.  Both games will be streamed live and can be found by clicking here.
