Chateau heading to Humber rafters

Humber's Ray Chateau was honoured on Sept. 23 in a surprise ceremony at the annual Hawks Family Night gathering.

ETOBICOKE - Known around campus as the athletic director of Humber Varsity, Ray Chateau was celebrated Friday evening for what he accomplished as the head golf coach in the 2000s. Chateau's banner will hang from the rafters at the North Campus Gym - the highest honour athletes, coaches, and builders can receive from Humber Athletics.

Chateau is the most decorated coach in Humber's history and was responsible for creating Humber's second superpower. His program captured ten national titles from 2001-12, along with six individual titles, as well. He served 12 seasons as head golf coach and provided the blueprint for building one of the nation's top collegiate programs. Against the top golfers in Canada, his team's captured three RCGA University/College titles and placed on the podium an additional four times.

Several individuals flourished under Chateau's watchful eye, as eight of his players would go on to be inducted into the Humber Hall of Fame. He produced 22 CCAA All-Canadian selections during his 12-year tenure, including a record four selections in 2010.

His ability to develop talent and his team's ability to perform did not go unnoticed.  On six occasions, Chateau represented Canada as the head coach at the FISU World University Games.  His Team Canada squads finished fourth in 2006 and fifth in 2010.

In 2012, Chateau received the CCAA Coaching Excellence Award, becoming the first non-basketball or volleyball coach to receive the honour. He was inducted into the Humber Hall of Fame in 2013 and then into the OCAA Hall of Fame in 2017.

Chateau is now the 33rd member of Humber Varsity to have his jersey honoured.
