HAWKS STRENGTHEN SQUAD WITH ADDITION OF CRYSTAL QU
ETOBICOKE, ON: The Humber Hawks coaching staff have done it once again, as they have added one of the nation's top women's badminton players in Crystal (Yuying) Qu.
Crystal, originally from Guangzhou, China, comes to the Hawks with a wealth of experience and success. She started playing badminton at the age of four, and moved up the ranks quickly, qualifying for the Provincial team at the age of 11. In China, she claimed a Provincial title in women's doubles and then placed third on the National level.
"Crystal is as fine a player that we have brought in the Hawks badminton program", said Humber head coach Raymond Wong, "but what has delighted us, even more, is her eagerness to be a member of the Hawks family, and want to grow as a player and teammate with the entire group when she is here."
She has been in Canada since 2015 and recently graduated from Alathana International Academy in North York. She has enrolled in the English as a Second Language at Humber Lakeshore.
Since her arrival in Canada, she has made an impact on both the Provincial and National level. She is currently ranked sixth in both women's singles and women's doubles in Ontario. On the National stage, she checks in at ninth in women's singles, and sixteenth in women's doubles.
Most recently, she was a member of the 2017 Yonex Atlantic Elite women's doubles gold medalists, and place third in women's singles at the Yonex BC Elite series.
"I chose Humber because of the reputation of Humber's badminton team", said Qu. "I hope to help Humber win medals, gain experience, discover new cultures and make friends."
She will take to the court wearing the Humber colours on the weekend of January 19 – 21 at the St. Clair Invitational in Windsor. The OCAA Regionals and Provincials will take place in February, and the CCAA Nationals will follow in early March.
