Women's Soccer capture 2023 Indoor Gold Medal
VAUGHAN – The Humber women's soccer program captured the OCAA indoor soccer title Friday afternoon, defeating the Seneca Sting at the Ontario Soccer Centre, 1-0.
After outscoring their opponents in the championship round robin 15-2, the Hawks put themselves in a prime position to return to the gold medal game for the fifth straight season. Humber opened the day with a clean sheet victory over Centennial in the semifinal, setting up a rematch with Seneca from the 2022 outdoor championship match.
Keeper Isabella Bernardi was brilliant between the pipes for Humber, turning away multiple scoring opportunities for the Sting.
After 40 minutes was not enough to determine a winner, the gold medal match went to extra time. A slide tackle in the box led to a Humber penalty kick, with a goal securing the win for Humber. Brampton midfielder Catarina Medeiros stepped to the spot and buried her shot past the Sting keeper to capture the gold for Humber.
Head coach Jose Caro led the Hawks to their second OCAA gold medal this season in his first year at the helm.
It was the last career match for five-year defender Remi Pelletier, who finished her brilliant career with three OCAA gold medals, three silver, and a bronze.
Catrina Medeiros was named championship MVP, while Isabella Bernardi was named the co-top keeper. Vanessa Reda was named to the all-tournament team.
The gold medal was Humber Athletics 13th of the season and 325th overall.
