ETOBICOKE, ONT: It took five sets but in the end the Humber Hawks men's volleyball (4-0, 3rd West) team remained undefeated so far this season in a 3-2 win over the Sheridan Bruins (3-3, 5th West).
In what was a back and forth game with many lead changes, the Hawks and Bruins put on a show for the fans who attended the game. In the win, the Hawks as a group hit .297 compared to Sheridan's .213.
The Bruins took the first set before Humber would bounce back and win the next two. Sheridan and Humber would play a long fourth set which ended 31-29 for the Bruins, meaning there would be a fifth and final set which the Hawks would win.
Second-year Calgary native Alex Gibbs was a key figure for the Hawks all night. Anywhere the ball was you could find Gibbs in the area. The outside hitter finished the night with a career-high 25 points (23 kills, two aces).
St. Catharines native Clayton Blanchette, much like his teammate Gibbs, also had a big night for the Hawks. The second-year outside hitter finished the game with 27 points (23 kills, three aces, 1 block), which was a team-high.
The player of the game would go to third-year Humber setter Adam Kinoshita who finished the game with five points (one kill, one ace, three blocks) but finished the night with a season-high 57 assists.
With the win, the 4-0 Hawks move into a tie for second place with Mohawk College (4-0, 2nd West) and sit just two points back of first place Fanshawe Falcons (5-1, 1st West).
Humber's next game will be Wednesday, November 23, when they travel to Niagara to take on the Niagara Knights (2-3, 7th West) at 8 p.m.
