Men's Rugby captures 2023 OCAA silver medal

BARRIE – Humber Rugby finished on the provincial podium for the first time since 2019, winning the OCAA silver medal Sunday afternoon at J.C. Massie Field.  The Hawks fell to the Georgian Grizzlies, 26-10.

Appearing in their first championship match since 2014, the Hawks were in tough against the Grizzlies, who were appearing in their fifth consecutive title match.

Georgian wasted little time getting on the board, scoring its first try after a lineout in the fourth minute. The Grizzlies missed the conversion and took an early lead, 5-0.

After missing a penalty kick, Humber had a chance to get on the board in the 24th minute, driving deep in the Georgian zone but the Grizzlies forced a turnover right at the try line.

With time running out, Georgian scored its second try of the match, extending its lead to 12.

Needing desperately to respond before the break, Prince Ndukwe finally broke through for the Hawks, ending the first half with a try. Humber missed the conversion and went into the break trailing, 12-5.

Georgian received a yellow card and played the first ten minutes of the second half down a man, yet the Hawks were unable to capitalize.

18 minutes into the second half, Jah'ma-l Drummond scored for the Hawks but missed the conversion to tie the match.

On the ensuing kick-off, Humber turned the ball over to lead to another Georgian try and after the successful conversion, the Grizzlies put the match away and came away with the victory, 26-10.

Ngatukumbe Kaukumangera and Tye Wallace were named championship all-stars.
