Gomes, Fadare Receive Top Honours at Men’s Volleyball Banquet
Humber wins coach of the year, player of the year, rookie of the year, West Division title, and four all-star honourees at the 2020 OCAA Men's Volleyball Awards Banquet.
PETERBOROUGH – The top program in the province garnered numerous accolades Wednesday evening when the league announced its yearly awards as determined by a polling of the conference's coaches.
Third-year setter Jake Gomes was the headliner on the evening after he was named a CCAA All-Canadian, OCAA Player of the Year, and a first team all-star. He becomes Humber volleyball's eighth All-Canadian selection and joins Terrel Bramwell as the only Hawk to receive Player of the Year honours. Gomes became the first player to recorded 1,000-plus career assists for the Hawks while setting Humber's offence up to lead the league with a .367 swing percentage.
Freshman phenom Joshua Fadare was named the conference's rookie of the year while also being named to the all-rookie team. The highly-touted recruit led the top-ranked team in the nation in kills per set (3.03), points (147) and points per set (3.5). In his first postseason match, Fadare stifled the Colts from start-to-finish, ending with a game-high 15 points.
Along with Gomes, four Hawks were named to the all-star squad. Senior Andrew Blakey was a first team selection for the second straight season, leading the team in blocks while finishing with a .538 swing percentage.
Rady Kim was selected as a second team all-star for the second team, leading the team in digs for the second straight year. Outside hitter Rrezart Sadiku finished his career-year with his first all-star selection. Sadiku finished with a career-high 143 points and finished third in the league with a .380 swing percentage.
Since 1987, the Hawks have had 55 OCAA all-star selections.
