PREVIEW: 2023 OCAA Rugby 7's Championship Tournament

The Storyline

Humber rugby sevens (6-7-1, 5th OCAA) is heading to Belleville for the 2023 OCAA championship tournament, beginning October 28. Humber's quarter-final matchup will begin at 10 a.m. against the host squad, Loyalist College (6-7-1, 4th OCAA).

The Matchup
  • Split the season series, 1-1.
  • Two tries from Amy Johnson and another from Mara De Melo helped Humber win the first meeting on Sept. 23 at Durham, 17-10.
  • On Oct. 15, the Lancers blanked Humber in a 26-0 victory in Peterborough.
  • 2023 OCAA Rookie of the Year Ryan Fitzpatrick led the Lancers in scoring, recording 52 points.
All-Stars

After leading the team in scoring this season, Mia Berry was named a league all-star. 2022-23 Rugby Sevens Coaches Pick, Jada Fowler, was also named a league all-star.

Postseason

The Hawks are searching for their league-best fourth rugby seven's gold medal.

At the Helm

In his seventh season with rugby sevens, Coach Essue has a 7-3 (.700) record in the OCAA postseason.

In Tough

The quarter-final winner will meet the Durham Lords (14-0, 1st OCAA) in the semifinal at 11:30 a.m. The Lords want to become the first program to successfully defend their provincial title. They are led by OCAA Player of the Year Emily Cooper, who was also this season's scoring champion.
