Softball opens national championship with 1-1 record

KANATA – Humber women's softball finished day one at the CCSA national championship with a 1-1 record and will conclude pool play on October 12.

After dropping the opening game to Western, 11-3, the Hawks responded with a better team effort in a must-win game against the Calgary Dinos.

Two early unearned runs saw Humber fall behind in the second inning, but Zoe Scougall was able to pick up her defence and get the Hawks out of the jam.

Humber looked to have a big inning in the second frame, with RBIs from Jessica La Ronde and Shea Hilpert to tie the game, but the Hawks ended up leaving the bases loaded.

The Dinos tried to respond in the top of the third inning, loading the bases, but this time, Humber's defence came up big. Rookie Victoria Lopez made a spectacular diving catch on a line drive from Calgary, getting up to turn the double play and get Humber out of the inning.

Rilee Devries continued to swing a hot stick, leading off the home half of the inning with a triple and scoring on a sacrifice fly from River Johnston.

From there, Scougall dominated from the circle, retiring nine of the next 11 hitters she faced.

Needing to hold the Dinos from scoring, Shade Hansen came into the game in the seventh inning, recording two strikeouts to earn the save and keep Humber's medal hopes alive.
