NEW LOOK HAWKS MEN TO DEFEND 2017 CURLING TITLE
ETOBICOKE, ON: The Humber Hawks men's curling team, 2017 OCAA gold medalists, will have a few familiar faces to OCAA curling circles but certainly a change from the team that won last year.
They will travel to Sault Ste. Marie on Tuesday evening in preparation of the 2018 OCAA Curling Championships that kick off on Thursday morning. The championship banquet and coaches meeting will take place on Wednesday night.
The venue, as it has been on numerous occasions for provincial and national championships is the Community First Curling Centre.
HAWK NOTES
Of Significance:
2017 OCAA Gold Medalists
Returning:
Sean Armstrong
Mathew Morra
Michael Morra – 2017 Second Team Mixed All-Star Skip
Gone:
Zack Shurtleff
Kyle Mills
New:
Matthew Garner
Gavin Hinton
Outlook:
Zach Shurtleff, one of the most successful curlers in Hawks history, returns this year, but as a coach. Michael Morra, the skip of the Hawks 2017 gold medal winning mixed team, has picked up the reins for the men's team. He is joined by his brother Matthew, and Sean Armstrong, both of whom won gold with the men last year. The new players have solid backgrounds in the game and should add depth and experience to the squad. Michael showed an aggressive side to his game last year in mixed, and this approach helped him to be successful. The men's game may be a little more tactical in nature, so it will important that he is able to alter his approach from end to end and from match to match. There is no reason to think that this five-some will not make it through to medal play on Sunday.
