HAWKS KUMAR EARNS HUMBER’S FIRST EVER CCAA MEN’S SINGLES GOLD MEDAL
TRURO, NS: Ramnish Kumar has made history, as he becomes the first-ever Humber Hawks men's singles badminton Gold Medalist. He claimed the individual title on Saturday at Dalhousie A.C. in Nova Scotia.
Kumar defeated Nicolas Pittman of Concordia (ACAC), but it took the maximum 3 sets to get it done, and it was fitting that Kumar had to come from behind to do it. The final set scores were 19-21, 21-11, 21-15.
His road to gold over the last three days has been one filled with many more valleys than one would expect from a national championship run. Sickness and serious injury early in the tournament was key in back-to-back opening losses, and almost came into play in the way in having to concede the third. But, as all champions do, you fight.
And, fight he did.
He won the next three round robin matches to place fourth after pool play. He then knocked off the first seed, and defending CCAA silver medalist in three sets to earn the right to play for gold.
His road, although filled with valleys, as mentioned previously, became one of peaks by way of his five consecutive wins.
Once again, off on the sidelines and in the crowd, it was clear that the always evident Mike Kopinak "fist pump" came into play, signifying a Hawks win.
