NORTH YORK - Humber women's basketball (10-7, 5th West) opened their postseason with a 69-51 win against Seneca (6-9, 4th East). Kia Watt had an incredible game, leading the team in points, rebounds, and assists, posting a 16-11-6 stat line, but it was a true team effort offensively. Four Hawks scored ten or more points in order to secure the win. Sarah Baptie was a force at both ends as well, scoring 13 points and adding eight rebounds.

Game Recap

You can never know what to expect facing a team that you haven't seen all season. It was a scary start for the Hawks, as a pair of turnovers would give the Sting an early lead. Sarah Baptie was having none of it, though, scoring back-to-back buckets (with a steal in between) to tie the game just eight seconds after Seneca took the lead. Humber would continue to be the better team in the first, knocking down shot after shot and shooting at a high percentage. The Hawks would lead 20-12 through ten minutes of play.

Seneca would catch fire in the early stages of the quarter. The Sting would go on an 8-0 run, and it felt like there was a force field around the basket as the Hawks couldn't get a shot to fall. Humber would gain some composure in the late stages of the quarter and would go into halftime hanging onto a 29-26 point lead.

Humber flipped the script once again after halftime, going from hanging onto a lead to widening it. The Hawks would maintain a seven-point lead for the majority of the quarter, but Seneca would close the gap more than once. Humber responded by playing harder defence and resorting back to playing its system each time. The Hawks would end the quarter by going on an 8-2 run. They would lead 52-40 through thirty minutes of action.

The final quarter of play started out positively for the Sting. Seneca went on an 8-3 run and climbed its way back into the game. However, Humber shut the door with scores 55-48. The Hawks would go on an incredible 14-0 run and would hold Seneca scoreless for more than five minutes. Beverly Omere would catch fire, scoring seven points in just under four minutes. Seneca would finally hit a free throw to make it 69-49, but Humber had ended the game with the run, now winning by 20 points with less than two minutes left in the game. The fourth ended quietly, with both teams taking a step back. Humber would go home with the 69-51 point win.
