BRAMPTON - On Thursday evening, Humber women's basketball (8-6, 5th West) won a commanding victory over the bottom-ranked Sheridan Bruins (0-14, 9th West) 86-49. Katherine Khorovets led offensively with a season-high 15 points on 67% shooting.

Game Recap

Matched up against the only team in the OCAA without a win. Humber knew that all they had to do to bring home the victory was play their game. It was a rough start for the Hawks as Sheridan got up to a 5-0 lead early on. Humber would stay behind all through the first quarter, battling to keep it close but struggling to knock down easy baskets. Sheridan would lead 19-15 after the first quarter.

The Hawks came into the second quarter frustrated. They knew they hadn't played the basketball they could and were trailing a team with a 0-13 record. The Hawks turned up the offence with key baskets from throughout the lineup. Teija Wareham, Sapna Deo, and Kia Watt scored consecutive baskets to bring the Hawks within one. Just minutes later, Kia Watt forced a turnover, drove the lane to finish a layup, and gave the Hawks their first game lead. Humber was still struggling with consistency but had settled into a much more manageable groove. The lead would exchange hands before the half would end deadlocked 35-35.

Humber came into the second half sick and tired of fighting for the lead. The Hawks knew they were the better team and finally caught fire. Sheridan's hopes of winning their first game of the season were quickly dashed as Humber went on an astounding 16-0 run. Humber held Sheridan scoreless for the first six and a half minutes of the quarter, giving their most dominant performance of the season. During the run, Humber got baskets from all five players on the court, showing their best team play all season. The quarter would end with Humber owning a commanding 61-40 lead, having outscored the Bruins 26-5 during the quarter.

Humber kept the story the same in the fourth quarter. The game was already well out of reach for Sheridan. All the Hawks had to do was sit back and play smart basketball. Instead of sitting back, Humber kept its foot on the gas pedal. The team was clicking like they hadn't yet this season and were scoring at will against the bottom-ranked Bruins. It was selfless basketball, with Humber focusing on dynamic ball movement and getting high-percentage looks. The Hawks would go on to outscore Sheridan 25-9 in the quarter, keeping the Bruins from their first win. The final score was 86-49. Tejia Wareham and Kia Watt scored double-doubles, and Beverly Omere added 11 points.

Humber Highlights
  • The Hawks extend their win streak to 19 consecutive games over the Bruins.
  • Beverly Omere's 11 points are a new career high.
  • Teija Wareham recorded her third double-double of the season.
