SHORTSOP SENSATION MATTSON NAMED THE OCAA PLAYER OF THE YEAR

LONDON, ON: Sean Mattson, second year shortstop from Scarborough, has been named the OCAA Men's Baseball Player of the Year, in an announcement made at the 2015 OCAA Championship Awards Banquet on Thursday evening.

Mattson, a former member of Canada's National Junior Program, was also honoured as the OCAA All Star shortstop for the second consecutive year.

His offensive numbers speak for themselves. He checks in with a batting average of .408 (5th), RBI's at 23 in just 16 games played (2nd), on base percentage at .532 (1st) and doubles with 9 (1st). As the three-hole hitter for the second place Hawks, he has been asked to produce, and produce he has.

The all-time baseball adage calls for "strength up the middle" defensively, and Sean' performance is the epitome of that very proverb. A former pitcher, he has the arm strength to make the most difficult play, no matter the distance. Recruited as a third baseman in his freshman season, he quickly adapted to the role at shortstop and seamlessly expanded the ground needed to cover at short.

Offence and defence aside, his biggest contribution to his team is his humility and team-first attitude. As a player with significant high-level playing experience he is the one to lead on and off the field.

"There is something to be said for a player, especially with Sean's baseball pedigree, that does not shy away from game in and game out expectations of an athlete", said Hawks Assistant Coach Matt Ferriera. "He is the first guy to grab a bag on the road, or join in with post-game field maintenance".

Mattson will lead his Humber Hawks in the quest for the 2015 OCAA Championship, which starts on Friday, October 23, with the Hawks matched up against the host Fanshawe Falcons.
