About

Having been involved in all aspects of the Humber men’s volleyball program, as a player, assistant coach and head coach and one of the winningest and well-respected coaches in the sport, Wayne Wilkins enters his 28th year at the helm of the Hawks’ men’s volleyball team for the 2023-24 season.

Capturing the 2012 CCAA National Championship and helping build the Hawks into one of the province's premier men’s volleyball powers, Wilkins has compiled a career record of 408-131, winning over 75 percent of his matches. He leads all active OCAA men’s volleyball head coaches in wins.

The longest-tenured coach in Humber's history, Wilkins has twice been named the CCAA Coach of the Year (2005, 2020), while receiving three OCAA Coach of the Year (2002, 2005, 2020) nods.

He has mentored ten CCAA All-Canadian selections, including two-time winner Terrel Bramwell, who became the program’s first national player of the year in 2012. In 2022, Joshua Fadare and Jake Gomes became the first duo in program history to earn an All-Canadian selection in the same season. Fadare also earned National Player of the Year honours. Wilkins has also coached 57 All-Ontario selections, including 36 first-team selections.

Within the OCAA, Wilkins’ teams have been even more dominating, racking up wins at an 80 percent clip in 27 seasons. The five-time OCAA Division Coach of the Year has led the Hawks to six provincial titles, including three straight championships from 2010 to 2012. In 2019, Wilkins’ squad went undefeated in OCAA action (22-0), winning the provincial title without losing a match for the second time in program history. After the COVID-19 pandemic cancelled the following season, his squad returned exactly where they left off, finishing the abbreviated 2022 OCAA season (13-0) undefeated once again. Humber's 35 wins and counting against the OCAA is a new program record, crushing its previous best of 19 from 2011-12.

Wilkins and the Hawks have made it nearly impossible for opponents to win at the North Campus Gym during his tenure. He has accrued a 162-30 (.844) home record and orchestrated ten undefeated seasons on home court. The longest home winning streak in Humber history that spanned nearly a decade occurred under his guidance, lasting 54 matches from Dec. 1, 1993, to Oct. 30, 2003. Forty-three of those victories came under Coach Wilkins' guidance.

Before Wilkins took over at the helm, a provincial volleyball title eluded the Hawks for nearly three decades. However, in 2005, Humber completed its first perfect season to win the OCAA Championship for the first time since 1975. Chris Simek dominated the championship match, delivering a 27-kill performance to be named championship MVP in Humber’s straight-set sweep over Seneca.

2012 was a magical season for Coach Wilkins and his squad, as the Hawks ran the gauntlet to capture the program’s first CCAA national championship. After winning their third straight provincial title, the Hawks went to Abbotsford, British Columbia, and put OCAA volleyball back on the map. Led by superstar Terrell Bramwell’s record 43 kills in the finals, Humber defeated Douglas College, 3-1. The Hawks became just the second OCAA team to win a national championship in men's volleyball, joining the 1983 Sheridan Bruins.

A slow start to the 2022-23 season saw a lot of folks write off Coach Wilkins squad, but a second-semester surge saw Humber go on to win its third straight provincial title - a feat the program has now accomplished, twice. On February 5, 2023, Wilkins joined his brother as the only members of Humber's 400-win club in a straight-set sweep of the Sheridan Bruins. The Hawks would go on to win their second CCAA medal in three seasons, this time in front of a sold-out crowd at the North Campus gym.

A Level 2 Certified coach, Wilkins’ passion for coaching expands beyond Humber College. He’s coached Pakmen Boys and Girls teams to multiple OVA tournament victories, bringing the 18U boys’ squad from 33rd in the country to a top-four finish. He also coaches the Team Magnus Spartans in the One Volleyball Professional League.

Before he joined the Humber coaching staff in 1994, Wilkins played on the team for four seasons, accumulating a 27-29 record and winning the OCAA silver medal during the 1993-94 season. He graduated from Humber College with a diploma in Business Administration – Sport Equipment Technician.

Humber volleyball runs deep in the Wilkins family, with both his son, Kamyn, and daughter, Kyla, both donning the blue and gold. Under his father’s tutelage, Kamyn captured three OCAA silver medals in four seasons and sits fourth all-time with 89 career service aces. Kyla was a four-time OCAA champion with the women’s team, ending her career with the most digs in program history.

Wilkins currently resides in Brantford, ON with his wife Tamara, who he credits with all of his success. He's the proud father of four children and has recently become a grandfather of four.
