About

Omar Miles is entering his third season as the head coach of the Humber men's basketball team in 2023-24. Miles was introduced as head coach by Athletic Director Ray Chateau on April 29, 2020. Following four seasons as the assistant coach, Miles became the 13th head coach in program history.

After his first official season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Miles did not waver from his promise to rebuild the culture by elevating a program that strives to win on and off the court. The Coach O era began like none before, as the Hawks finished the abbreviated season with a perfect 9-0 record and the highest-scoring offence in the province. The remodelled provincial championships saw the Hawks host four consecutive games, winning every game by 14 or more points to capture the program's 15th OCAA title and the first since 2016.

As the hosts of the 2022 CCAA national championship, the pressure on the Hawks to capture a title on home court like the '01 squad was high, but Coach Miles kept his team focused. After a quick quarter-final victory over Capilano, the Hawks were tested in the next round against SAIT. Trailing by two with less than 10 seconds left, a timeout from Coach Miles and his staff allowed the Hawks to create a perfect play to try to force overtime. Using Frank Mitchell as a decoy, Kevin Otoo found himself alone for an easy layup to tie the game to force overtime. With a late lead in the extra frame, Mitchell sent a shot back into the crowd, sending Humber to its 11th national final game.

In a rematch of the OCAA final from ten days prior, the Hawks defeated the St. Clair Saints once again, 101-94. At the final whistle, emotions soared as the players embraced. Humber overcame the obstacles thrown in front of them, never losing sight of the final goal. A global pandemic, an abbreviated season, and the loss of alumnus Kenny Ejim. It all played a major role in making Humber's seventh title that much more important. In front of family and friends, and on the court where they spilled their blood, sweat, and tears, Coach Miles and the players celebrated as national champions.

Under Coach Miles' tutelage, DeQuon Cascart became the first player in Humber basketball's storied history to be named the OCAA Athlete and Player of the Year in 2022.

A FIBA certified and NCCP Train to Compete (Level Three) certified coach, Miles has been coaching basketball since 2008. In his role as an assistant coach, he helped the St. Edmund Campion girls team capture the 2014 OFSAA 4A title. In the same year, he led the boys to an OFSAA 4A silver medal. Eventually, his desire to be a part of his son's basketball goals brought him to a team consultant role with Team Breakdown's U12 boys. He assembled a group of coaches and young boys who captured the 2017 OBA division one gold medal. In 2019, he helped the U17 Team Ontario boys basketball team garner the silver medal at the national tournament in New Brunswick.

Coach Miles' Team Ontario resume extends well beyond coaching. From 1998 to 2001, Miles represented Ontario on the hardwood, capturing the national championship in 2001 as team captain, and being named the tournament's most valuable player under head coach Chris O'Rourke. He went on to be a five-year starter for Wilfrid Laurier of the OUA and graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography with a Minor in French.  As a rookie, the Mississauga native was named to the OUA's men's basketball rookie all-star team.

As a coach at St. Edmund Campion, numerous players have moved through the ranks to don the blue and gold under Coach Miles' tutelage. Curwin Elvis (2014-19) played five years for the Hawks, finishing his career ninth all-time in Humber scoring, while C.J. Bennett (2015-18) is one of just 16 players to score 300-plus points in a season for Humber basketball.

Miles currently resides in Mississauga with his wife Makesha, son, Nehemiah, and two daughters, Mya and Ariana.
