Student Therapist Alumni Spotlight: Justin Miranda

Spotlight Series: Justin Miranda

Justin started working in the clinic, with the women’s rugby team and men’s basketball as a student therapist. He helped rugby through an undefeated season despite being injury-plagued. Justin then went straight into the basketball season eventually placing second at provincials which lead to probably his most rewarding moment as a Humber Hawk: winning the CCAA championship against Vancouver Island University.

Once certified, Justin stayed on with Humber for three years working primarily with the women’s rugby 7’s team. His three years included a match with our men’s rugby squad against the University of Michigan, another CCAA basketball title game in Fort Mac and more rugby OCAA championship action.

Currently, Justin is living in British Columbia after accepting a position at Simon Fraser University. Working with the men’s soccer, track and field and softball teams have allowed him to travel internationally to a number of countries around the globe. Justin also treats in their clinic and helps oversee 20-30 student volunteers.

Using his expertise in athletic therapist and massage therapy, he plans to create a therapy program in the Greater Vancouver area and help grow the profession of athletic therapy in B.C.

When asked what advice does he have for current students he emphasized that studying the basics without overcomplicating them in the first few years should be a priority as they are the foundation that you can always fall back on. He also encourages students to use the amazing resources that they have at their disposals such as their professors, placement supervisors and other students

Outside of AT, Justin has travelled to over 20 countries. He has also completed his open water scuba certification and plans to complete his advanced certification. He’s a self-proclaimed foodie (even though he won’t touch eggs) and loves growing his watch collection, dreaming of someday creating his own brand. Lastly, if you know Justin you know that he is a massive soccer fan even though his favourite team has been stressing him out since 2010.
