Bio

Ray Chateau recently completed his tenth year as Director of Athletics and Recreation at Humber College.  Since taking the job on August 1, 2013, (succeeding the renowned Doug Fox, who had held the position since September 1990), Chateau has not only maintained Humber’s unparalleled athletics success but also has placed an increased emphasis on the primary focus of Humber Athletics: to facilitate and augment the education and growth of its student-athletes through their participation in competitive OCAA and CCAA Athletics, to educate and prepare student-athletes to compete at the highest levels in life after graduation, and to accomplish both with honour and integrity.

Chateau took the job as Director of Athletics and Recreation at Humber after a career as a faculty member and golf team coach consistently hallmarked by championship trophies.  In just nine varsity seasons, Humber has produced 34 CCAA championships in eight different sports (a national best), 108 OCAA championships (a provincial best), and 104 Academic All-Canadians during Chateau’s tenure.

Chateau’s vision has impacted the Humber Athletics Department in numerous ways over the last ten years, particularly in his efforts to directly enhance the daily experience of every Humber student-athlete.  Continuing the vision from Doug Fox, Chateau has spearheaded the renovations for the gymnasium at the Lakeshore Campus, including the facility upgrades that were recently completed.  He has also led numerous other facility and departmental improvements, including major renovations at the Humber Athletic Centre, which have begun to transform an aging facility into one of the country’s most dynamic venues.

In 2022, Chateau was selected as the co-recipient of the CCAA Athletic Director Award after the Hawks once again excelled athletically and academically. Humber led the nation with 15 CCAA Academic All-Canadian selections for the second straight year while capturing eight national and 22 provincial medals. In August of that year, he received the 2022 Robert A. Gordon Leadership Award. The award recognizes an employee who has demonstrated high levels of leadership that enhances the reputation of Humber or the University of Guelph-Humber, both internally and externally, in accordance with the College’s mission, values and goals.

During his 12-year tenure as head coach (2001-13), Chateau’s golf teams won a nation-best ten team national championships and 50 overall tournaments, a record that may never be surpassed.

After his historic coaching run, Chateau was inducted into the Humber Varsity Hall of Fame in 2013 and the OCAA Hall of Fame in 2017.

In 2023, Chateau became the second Humber head coach inducted into the CCAA Hall of Fame.

A native of Sault Ste. Marie, On., Chateau attended Western University and Concordia University before receiving his MBA from York University.

Chateau and his wife, Danielle, reside in Etobicoke with their two daughters.
