ETOBICOKE, Ont -- No.3 Humber Hawks men's basketball (14-0, 1st West) had another dominating performance Thursday night, defeating the Conestoga Condors (0-14, 11th West), 118-77.
All five starters for Humber finished with double-digit scoring, led by Fowzi Mohamoud's 23 points, including a career-high seven three-pointers. Jordon Francis added 18 points, while freshman Kevin Otoo finished with 16. Curwin Elvis and Jaylan Morgan finished with 10 points, each.
The game began with both team's exchanging fast buckets. The Condors took a 9-8 lead which would be their first and only lead of the game. The Hawks quickly responded and began catching fire, as frustration began to show for the Condors as Jody Brown picked up a technical foul after a foul on Curwin Elvis. Conestoga's Tucker Sutton kept his team in the game with back-to-back threes cutting the Hawks lead to five however, the Hawks made another run with Kevin Otoo knocking down a buzzer beater to end the first quarter giving Humber a 10-point lead.
In the second frame, the Hawks defence helped them force multiple turnovers which led to fast break points. Jordan Francis got the crowd going with a big slam dunk, followed by a three-pointer for Jaylan Morgan which gave them a 22-point lead. Unlike other games, Humber kept the intensity and continued to add-on to the lead.
The Hawks displayed a shooting clinic against the Condors. Every active player recorded a point. Humber recorded a program-best 21 three-pointers (since 2011), two shy of the OCAA record. Fowzi Mohamoud had the hot-hands all night, finishing with a regular season career-high 23 points. Mohamoud opened the game with a three-pointer beginning what would be a big night for him. His team fed off his shooting performance and began making it rain from behind the ark.
"It's very contagious when anyone starts to hit shots, not just me," said Fowzi Mohamoud. "The next guy will start to get hot and it gets the bench going. It's a crazy atmosphere to be a part of."
Indeed, the atmosphere in the gym was contagious as Humber caught fire and never let up. This was the Hawks largest margin of victory this season, winning by 41 points. The athletic Humber squad was too much for the Condors to contain, as a total of three players fouled out of the game. With the entire team being a threat to score, Conestoga simply had no answers on defence.
Coach Samson has officially had the best start for a first-year coach in Humber history. The system that the Hawks have run all year has been a major success. The entire team has bought into the coaches game plan.
"I have been playing awful all season," added Mohamoud, when asked about his career-high. "Just getting in the gym and getting extra shots up has really helped me and it showed during the game. I feel like once I hit a couple of shots the net just gets bigger.
This victory has solidified the Humber Hawks as a reckoned force on offence and defence. It will be fun to see how long this run will keep going.
What's Next?
No. 3 Humber will head on the road for a two-game weekend series with Sault (0-11, 10th West), Feb. 2-3.
