ETOBICOKE - After a disappointing loss to Niagara in its 2023 home opener, Humber looked to gain some momentum in the 110th regular-season edition of "the Game". Playing in front of a full home crowd, the Hawks finished with a commanding win, beating Sheridan 95-85. Jalen Menzies led the way for the Hawks, scoring 27 points and adding four rebounds.

Game Recap

The Hawks were unstoppable to begin the game, going on an 11-0 run and forcing head coach Jim Flack to call a timeout three minutes into the game. Point guard Jalen Menzies had ten points just five minutes into the game. The Bruins would rally back and get within five before Humber started to regain their momentum. Humber would lead 27-22 after the first quarter, led by Menzies' ten points.

The Bruins evened things out early in the second quarter, tying the game at 27. Sheridan would go on a massive 26-2 run that started in the first quarter and continued into the second. The run shocked Humber and the home crowd as all of a sudden, Sheridan was up 38-30. Humber struggled mightily from the charity stripe in the quarter, going two-for-eight, while the Bruins went seven-for-nine from the line in the quarter.

The Hawks were able to claw back before the break, trailing the Bruins by four after 20 minutes of action, 51-47.

Humber came out with newfound energy in the second half, going on a 12-2 run to start the quarter and regain the lead. A questionable call on Jayar Harewood got the Hawks rolling, and they would proceed to go on an 8-0 run to create a 72-60 lead on the Bruins. Adrian Aluyi commanded the floor; the small forward would score four points and add two steals and a block during that 8-0 run. Humber would go into the fourth quarter with a 76-71 lead.

With Humber looking to protect their slim lead, the Hawks slowed things down and focused on playing a clean game. Their defence would come through, holding the Bruins to just two points through the first three minutes and increasing their lead to 14. Humber would slow down the play and eat some time, but it would allow Sheridan to close the gap to eight with just over a minute remaining in the game. Two clutch free throws from Jalen Menzies would make it 93-85, ultimately sealing the game for Humber.

Jalen Menzies was your Hawks Player of the Game with 27 points and four rebounds.
