HAWKS LOOK TO STAY PERFECT AS REGULAR SEASON WINDS DOWN
ETOBICOKE, ON: The Humber Hawks women's rugby team, winners of the inaugural OCAA title last season, continue to be an elite team in the league by way of their perfect 9-0-0 record this year.
Humber will have their most challenging day of competition since the season began, as they will play four matches on Saturday afternoon at Fleming College in Peterborough. So far, they have been limited to days where playing three games was the norm.
The games will be played on the Fleming Sports Fields, and this will be the same location for the 2017 Championship event on November 4. Two things work well for the Hawks. First, they will get a good look at the field where the championship title will be competed for. And, secondly, they have shown that they raise their level of play when playing on a turf field such as the Fleming site.
Humber, at 9-0-0, are comfortably in front of the second place Fleming Knights (6-3-0). The real battle looks to be the fourth and final play-off spot, where a number of teams will be fighting it out the rest of the way. After this weekend, a final day of play will take place the following weekend at Sheridan. Humber will play their final three games on that day.
Humber is far and away in front of all teams in every statistical category. They have scored 274 points, while surrendering a paltry 47.
Hawk standout and national team player Christina Branch is literally "running" away with the scoring title. Her 94 points (10 tries, 22 converts) puts her 26 pints ahead of her closest competitor. Humber's Cheyenne DeLuca also resides in the top ten in scoring, with 50 points (10 tries).
