Warrick Manners Returns to the Hawks as Assistant Coach

ETOBICOKE – Humber basketball announced the hiring of alumnus Warrick Manners as their new assistant coach Thursday afternoon. Manners, who played for the Hawks from 1993 to 1996, will join Omar Miles' coaching staff at the Hawks Nest, joining Carlo Zoffranieri as the first two major moves in the Coach Miles era.

"I am grateful and excited to bring Warrick Manners on to my staff," Miles said. "In the many years that I've known him, Coach Manners has been a staple in the basketball community coaching at various levels. His leadership and presence will be a welcomed addition to our team. "

The name Warrick Manners holds major weight around the Humber athletics department. The Warrick Manners Sportsmanship Award is one of Humber's highest honours, given annually to the student-athletes who display athletic excellence in their sport and good sportsmanship throughout.

"I knew Coach Manners played at Humber but it was not until my first athletic banquet with Humber basketball that I learned of the Warrick Manners Sportsmanship Award," added Coach Miles. "The characteristics needed to win this award are embedded in my vision for the program. Coach Manners exemplifies living out and taking pride in the 'Humber way'."

Manners donned the blue and gold in the 90s when Humber basketball became the institution's first superpower. In his three seasons, the Hawks captured three provincial titles and the 1995 national championship, concluding his career with a 54-6 (.900) record.

"I am thrilled and honoured to be back home at the Hawks Nest, back with the program I had the privilege to be a part of," said Manners. "Having known Coach Miles for a number of years, I saw firsthand the guiding impact he had with young men and I have full confidence that the program will remain a perennial contender, not only at the provincial ranks but at the national level, as well."

Manners made his coaching debut in the OCAA in 1998, guiding the Seneca Sting for a decade. In 2003 he was promoted to head coach, holding the position for five years. To this day he continues to be influential in the Etobicoke basketball community, as the head coach of the junior and senior girls' basketball teams at Richview Collegiate Institute. In 2019, Coach Manners and Richview finished fourth at the senior girls' AAA OFSAA championship.

"I aim to provide an experienced level of leadership for these young men in situations both on and off the court," added Manners. "I want to enhance their student-athlete experience and to ensure they embody the 'Humber way'."
