HAWKS FINAL PLACING STILL UP IN THE AIR AFTER SPLIT

HAWKS FINAL PLACING STILL UP IN THE AIR AFTER SPLIT

By: Natalie Stoberman

MISSISAUGA, ON: Humber split Saturday's doubleheader to the Conestoga Condors under some of the most erratic weather conditions that you can experience in fall ball. While the first and second game were night and day for the Hawks, they capped off a 3-2 loss with a 12-2 six inning mercy.

The Hawks didn't waste any time getting on the scoreboard with catcher Lauren Hollidge and shortstop Bonnie Gillingham crossing the plate for 2-0 lead. The Blue and Gold looked as if they were on track but they lost the intensity that put them in the lead. They left an unusual amount of runners on base and left the door of opportunity open for the Condors to make a comeback throughout the game. Conestoga chipped away by scoring in the second inning and their go-ahead runs in the sixth. Despite a strong pitching performance from Myranda Pierson, the Hawks didn't have enough momentum going in the bottom of the seventh to capitalize with the bases loaded to change the outcome.

Game 2 was a completely different story. The Hawks put up four runs with the top six batters of the lineup getting on base and was capped by a two run double to centre field from left fielder Natalie Stoberman. Conestoga came back with two runs of their own but starting pitcher Amanda Van de Graaf held the Condors for the next two innings, with Brianna Donaldson closing off the game and keeping Conestoga batters reeling in the batter's box. Then the sunshine turned into hail, but the Hawks stayed strong at the dish and posted as many as four runs an inning on their way to the six inning mercy. Hawks Nation Player of the Game Bonnie Gillingham had a great day at the plate going 8-for-8 with a walk and scored four times.

Humber will face the Mohawk Mountaineers at 1 and 3 p.m. tomorrow for their second last regular season series.
