ETOBICOKE, Ontario: To say an early season doubleheader carries crucial status may be thought as being overstated, but for those who witnessed the intensity of the 1-0, game one win for the Hawks, it certainly rang true.
Game two, an 8-1 win for the visiting Saints, was as tight and exciting as the opener. Humber now sits with a record of 4-1, while the defending OCAA champion St. Clair squad checks in at 6-4.
Hawks freshman ace Myranda Pierson was dealing in game one, not allowing a single base runner over the first four innings. With the way she was controlling the game from the mound, it looked like a single run would make the difference, and that is exactly what happened.
Humber "Player of the Game" Natalie Stoberman led off with a single and stood on second base a batter later when Abby Hill drove her home with a solid hit up the middle. St. Clair did not threaten the rest of the way.
Second year hurler Amanda Van der Graaf was on the mound in game two. She battled her way along in a scoreless game, but saw the visitors push two across in the third, aided by a Hawk error. She moved into the fifth inning, with the Hawks still close enough to get close or even, but seemed to tire and was unable to find the strike zone. The Saints scored four times and then tacked on a couple more to finish with an output of eight runs. The Hawks loaded the bases late, but were only able to score once.
