HAWKS ANNOUNCE AWARD WINNERS!

Awards are being handed out to some of Humber's most decorated student athletes, celebrating their achievements both on the court and in the classroom. The following categories reward athletes for their exploits both athletically and academically:

Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame

In just one year on the Women's Basketball Team, Brenda Carachure has already left a mark on the Hawks with a tough style of play that has made her a team leader. Competing with an unmatched tenacity, Brenda finished second on the team in scoring with 7.3 points per game and third in rebounding with just under 7 per game. Hailing from Toronto, Carachure is enrolled in Police Foundations and has been recognized for her success in the classroom as an esteemed Dean's List member. Her dedication in all of her endeavors represents the best of Humber athletes.

First year Women's Fastball player Natalie Stoberman took home the highest honor for a freshman in winning the OCAA Rookie of the Year. With a big arm and quick feet, the native of Mississauga was immediately slotted a starting outfield position and was outstanding defensively all year. While her fielding was stellar, it was the offense that really stood out. Amongst the best at Humber in several categories, Stoberman hit .545, had 10 RBI's and scored twelve runs. Natalie is enrolled in the Accelerated Print and Broadcast Journalism Program, host's Humber broadcasts at sporting events, and is as well rounded off the field as she is on it.

Genevieve Bernier was a leader on the Humber Curling Team as her steady play helped pave the way for the team to capture the OCAA Mixed Bronze Medal. The chemistry on this year's squad was palpable and Bernier was a key part of a sense of unity and togetherness the curlers had. The Newmarket native excelled off the ice as well, where she has earned honors recognition in consecutive years. Genevieve enters her third year in the Personal Support Worker program, and is sure to put her people skills to use once she graduates. With two year of growth under her belt, Bernier has the team focused on capturing Gold this time around.

Georgetown product Kelly Nyhof is one of the most decorated athletes in Hawks history, and for good reason. The fourth year Child and Youth student has dominated OCAA Women's Volleyball like no other during her tenure, averaging a league leading 5.3 points per set along with 199 kills this season. Kelly earned her second consecutive awards as both OCAA Player of the Year and a CCAA All-Canadian, an exclamation mark on her stretch of dominance. Nyhof was given the highest praise of her career at the end of this season when she was selected to the Canadian National Women's team. Kelly will be returning next year for one more run, and the best collegiate player in the country is sure to continue her dominance.

Athletic Award of Excellence

In two years on the Women's Rugby Team, Sheriffa Hammond has become an integral part of the most dominant team in Ontario.  The Hawks are renowned for their defense as they allowed only three points all season, and Hammond led the way by punishing opponents whenever possible. The intimidation that she provides on the field is the opposite of her off-field persona, as she works diligently towards a degree in Police Foundations. Sheriffa excels in the classroom, earning honors recognition in both of her years and leading by example. She will be back next year, assuring the Hawks stout defense will return as well.

The OCAA Bronze medalist winning Women's Basketball team had several key players, perhaps none more important than small forward Natalie Hagopian. In her first year on the team, Hagopian contributed in several key areas as she shot over 73 percent from the free throw line and averaged over a steal a game. On the court she was all over the place, known for her quickness and unmatched tenacity that helped lead one of the top defensive outfits in Ontario. Natalie works just as hard off the court, receiving honors in the Fitness and Health Program where she hopes to stay in sport once her playing days are over.

Etobicoke native Nathaniel Green's tenure on the Hawks Cross Country team has directly coincided with the teams rise, and his contribution has a lot to do with it. Green was a crucial member of both the CCAA Bronze and OCAA Silver winning teams, putting up excellent times in both races while being named to Team Ontario.  While Nathaniel excels on the course, he does just as well in the classroom where he is working on his degree in Industrial Design and is a consistent honors student. Nathaniel will be back for one more year and should provide the hometown fans with a lot to cheer for with Nationals being hosted at Humber.

The Hawks Badminton team dominated Ontario this year, and Ryan Chow was a huge part of their success. One of the strongest doubles players in the country, Chow took home a Bronze in CCAA Mixed Doubles, Gold in OCAA Mixed Doubles and Gold in OCAA West Regional's. Ryan was just as strong in singles play, earning numerous invitational titles and being named an OCAA All-Star. The Mississauga native is enrolled in Police Foundations, earning honors recognition in his first year. Chow's brilliant freshmen year has Humber ecstatic for what the future holds.

Lesley Westervelt Award

Few players make much of an impact during their freshmen year, but Hayli Moore was an exception to that rule. In her first year with the Women's Volleyball Team she was always on the court, starting all 18 games and playing at an impressively high level.  Moore was second on the team in points per set at 2.7 and tallied 85 kills along with 83 blocks. The Cobourg native brought a great attitude to practice every day, challenging teammates to compete at her level day in and day out. Off the court Moore was a standout as well, enrolled in the Photography Program where she was an honors student.

Marcy Scribe Athletic / Academic Excellence Award

Caledon native Alex Dumais has been one of the top players on the most dominant collegiate golf team in the country, earning Men's All-Ontario Team nods the past two years and establishing himself as one of the best players on the circuit. On this year's National Championship Team Dumais shot an impressive plus-3, finishing in a tie for third and concluding his year in brilliant fashion. His performance off the course was just as steady, as he earned Dean's List honors in the Cabinet Making Program and became a role model for his exploits in the school just as much as his play on the course.

On top of taking home the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame Award, Brenda Carachure's excellence in the classroom has earned her a second honor. Her exploits on the court have been well documented; she averaged seven points and rebounds in just her freshmen year. This award recognizes her excellence in the classroom, were the Police Foundations student is one of the top achiever's in the entire school. A Dean's List member, Carachure is sure to excel wherever she may end up long after her playing career has come to an end.

The Brampton native has steadily improved since arriving at Humber, becoming a team leader and exhibiting unmatched toughness while never missing a game. She was always crashing the boards, pulling down rebounds at an impressive rate of 8.1 per game. A true warrior on the court, Oriuwa anchors the Hawks stout defense and always seems to be in position to make plays. Chioma is enrolled in the Social Services Program, were her empathy and kindness shine and she promises to be as great a help to others in the real world as she is to teammates on the court.
